Lady Jackets Looking Forward to 2010-11 Season

Lady Jacket basketball is off to a strong start so far this season. We have had over 12 practices, and there has been so much improvement already. We have 17 girls practicing and three more girls to come after soccer season. During our first five practices, we focused on nothing but offense.  After that was completed, we had several practices focusing on our defense and boxing out.

We have more depth to our team this year than in previous seasons with the number of newcomers and returners. There are 10 new Lady Jackets, eight of them being freshmen, and two seniors. There are also five sophomores, one junior, and four fourth-year seniors. In the preseason coaches’ poll, our team was picked to finish fourth in the conference behind Franklin, Hanover, and Transylvania. In addition to preseason picks, Courtney Schmersal and Tasha Stucke were placed on the HCAC Preseason Player-to-Watch list.

This year, one of our main goals as a team is to communicate better on the court, as well as on the sidelines. If you walk into the gym during practice, the gym will NEVER be silent. Our coaches have stressed the importance of cheering for our teammates and talking loudly on the court so everyone in the gym can hear. At the end of practice every day, the team who does the best at talking does not have to run “talkers” (sprints) after practice. This has been a very effective way to encourage us, as a team, to talk during practice.

Go Jackets!
